I bought A computer with Vista on it in the specific time period that you could get Windows 7 for free.

Done.~ my 24 hours was estimated inclusive of windows XP , ubuntu plus windows 7 multi-boot in case anything happened.

Looks good to me. Bootable to 3 OS with no issues.

I got it already actually. I Got a Radeon HD 5770. It's replacing my X1950XTX which is (unfortunately) not being supported by ATI in Windows 7. sad3.gif

OK, so I got my Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack on Monday. Had a chance to sit down with it and install and get it setup on my one PC yesterday and installed on the other.. setup today. I did a full format/reinstall for both computers. Both running the 64-bit version.

The first PC took about about 3 hours total. This included installing the new graphics card, installing the new OS, patching, and downloading/installing my applications.

The second PC took more like 1.5 hours because I didn't need to install a new graphics card and all of the applications were downloaded already from the other install so all I needed to do was install them one after the other.

Haven't had much of a chance to use it so far, but my general impressions are:
* Interestingly enough, I needed to download a patched version of the driver for the new graphics card. The official ATI driver didn't have support for the 5770. XD Sapphire's site did have a driver, though. Seems to work fine.

* Speed-wise, it boots quicker then Vista. Beyond that, it seems to run about the same speed.

* It does take up less space on the HD then Vista did. That sort of was an unexpected surprise!

* I like how UAC is less intrusive now.

* I like how the taskbar is a lot more like OSX's dock. It makes W7 feel more Mac-like.

* I still need to get used to some of the other interface changes, they all seem positive so far.

I'll admit it. As much as I thought that Windows 7 wouldn't be enough of a change to upgrade right away, I'm glad that I did. I've been liking it a lot better so far from what I've seen! It's no OSX but it's headed in the right direction.

The one thing that I have noticed (which may be a graphics driver issue or a Windows issue) is that every now and then my pointer arrow gets HUGE.. like 3-4x the normal size. It doesn't effect its functionality, but it's obnoxious to look at. Only thing that seems to fix it is a reboot.

Anyhow, here's the screenshots of my desktop for those who are curious. Yeah, the icons are the same. I like to keep the same stuff on my desktops. smile2.gif

Will give more impressions once I've had the chance to play around with it a bit more beyond installing.

I need the areo snap is one of the most useful ones currently.

By the way, there's one issue with regards to the spyware doctor that is posted on Davonator's free antivirus and spyware programs. That will result in instant hang if you install in windows 7.

I will update Dav to edit that later

As a follow-up to this. I researched it and found that this is a driver issue for the ATI 5xxx series of cards because there aren't any official drivers for this series yet. When Catalyst 9.11 comes out, this should be fixed.

Windows 7 crashed on me.. Hmmm Something to do with user log on error. Service failed to load.

But the auto repair console managed to redeem itself..

Not bad for first impression
