for some games, they have a set size of say 30mb. But what about the few games which constantly change in size as you get new stuff for it, like Unreal Tournament GOTY. What im trying to do is set up a virtual 'partition' without actually altering the 3 existing partitions. The virtual drive exists as a normal file, but i can mount it as a drive all its own and run it as such. Right now im using an on the fly encryption program called TrueCrypt to create the virtual volumes. But problem is, im using AES (which is is the fastest encrypted to decrypted speed avalible) and it eats my CPU alive. Worst case scenario is that i really warm my CPU, and i have managed to push it WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY the hell up to 85 degrees C, which i do believe is just too freaking hot for a laptop. Not to mention it pretty much slaughters performance in my games. Where i once got 200fps in UT, i now get 60 -80 fps, which isnt much faster than my locked refresh rate. I can take the hot CPU, as i have researched that it can hit 100 degrees C without failure. But the loss of performance is a no no, especially since my CPU has to do most of hte graphics work (my intel graphics chip SUCKS). So any suggestions?

Can I ask why you would want to run your games off a virtual mount program and I've used TrueCrypt before with 3 types of encryption in place (AES-Twofish-Serpent) on a file 15 gigabytes and I didn't have any problem decrypting it in a matter of seconds to have access to all my files, why would yours be taking up so much resources (such as a setting in TrueCrypt)?

I would like to run my games off a virtual volume because it helps keep all the files organized. Ut had over 2000 files by itself totaling 3gb, and dance dance revolution has somewhere along the lines of 28,000 files totaling 11.5gb. And if they are on the normal partitions, not only is the performance of the programs on the partition reduced, but the game takes longer to load and to get files for playing. I like to keep a very tidy hard drive, and having a game which gains a half dozen new files each time i play online kinda tosses the clean and tidy hard drive out the door. And there is no way i am going to unpack a 12gb game just to increase performance out of the truecrypt volume. My computer already strains enough with 256 bit AES encryption, and thats because i lack physical ram, and i dont have a good processor (1gb of ram and Pentium M ~2.0ghz)

My stats are around the same as well although there is very little you can do to increase performance. It still needs to extract information from all the files packed inside the encrypted file and continuously process and add information into the file. This type of thing is really meant to keep confidential files that you can later extract and work on or other simple things, not for organizing and running games off of.

Why couldn't you just install them into a folder in a location that suits you? The thing you are seeking is limited. If you still want to try something similar I could have a look around.

well try to take a look at something, including virtual cd drive programs. Just no VMware, becasue my machine doesnt have the resources to cope with such a thing

Well I couldn't find anything what your looking for, I suppose the only thing you can do is bear with the slowness, move them out of the encrypted file or make new partitions.
