I have done this at University in England. I really recommend it to anyone who has the right qualifications to do so. It was worth the 2 years for a foundation degree. But if you want to get a Bachelors or even a masters, you will spend atleast 4/6 years at Uni. My life would be so different without it. smile2.gif

I'm planning on doing a Bachelor of Computer Science in Software Engineering. I can't wait to start the course in a few years time because of my love of working with computers. I know it's going to be a good course, programming is always something I've considered but wanted to learn from a reliable source. What better place then university? This course does require maths specialists that can be done at the University itself (not sure what other countries would call it but it's the very difficult maths).

Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Enigneering)

If that fails (hopefully not) then I will go for a Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences or Bachelor of Computer and Information Science. All I know is it's going to be full of career options.

IMO, getting your Bachelor's in CompSci isn't worth it, unless your planning on publishing research in that field and need it for your credibility. Other than that, it doesn't matter what your degree is in. One of my friends who works for verisign confirmed this, he says they hire people with philosophy degrees, econ degrees, it really doesn't matter.

Mr Westie, "foundation degrees" are known as "associates degrees" here in the states, and are relatively useless over here. It may demonstrate to potential employers that you have some know how, but most of them are looking for the hands on experience that doesn't come with that kind of degree. At least in the US, most job requirements that list an associate/foundation degree read "associates degree, or equivalent experience".

One of my friends who is a Biology major already has a B.S. degree in CompSci. Basically he stated two things: 1 - CS majors burn out easily, 2 - it wasn't worth it (read: waste of time). I'm not a CS major, but I'll have to agree with cereal that unless you plan to do research or work at Google the degree probably isn't worth the time.

If you plan to do other majors (Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics) then the Bachelor's degree is worth the time. But you still have to have experience and research behind you.

Well, it's kind of the complete opposite here in England. Most upper class jobs require some sort of degree. I worked for a company and designed there website and scripted all of that sort and other. Only got that because i had the degree.

Well, in conclusion, it's worth it if you're in England! wink3.gif

Same here in Australia, without one of these degrees you can forget getting a job in that area.

Hrm, interesting. Don't get me wrong, without a bachelor's degree you'll find many jobs in the US out of reach, but any job that lists an associates degree you can land with a few years of equivalent experience.

I am getting a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration with a focus on Computer Information Systems. It really is worth it and a lot of employers now are looking for the business knowledge to go with the computer knowledge due to jobs being outsourced overseas. So a lot of the hardcore coding is done overseas whereas the project management aspect of stuff is done in-house.

I feel like my location gives me a better opportunity for a Computer Science major but I've so far left it open. I've started my freshman year at college with a mixture of Chem, Bio, Philosophy, and Physics. I'm wondering whether to try Economics (Bad time?) or possibly more Philosophy and/or Psychology.

I got my degree from the School of Hard Knocks.

Honestly though, a degree is a great thing in the eyes of most prospective employers even if they don't actually require you to have one. Jobs (in the U.S anyway) are growing harder to come by and the competition is getting fierce so any advantage you can muster up is a great investment.

In other words, some hands on experience is great in itself and a Bachelors degree on its own is also great. A Bachelors degree combined with experience is even better.

I'm also thinking about doing computer science at UNI. I've been looking in the UNI book for south australia and Northern territory lately as i've had to choose subjects for Yr11 next year. It's a 3 year course and doesn't seem that hard to get in to. All i need is Math studies and a TER grade of about 70% it seems. smile2.gif

Although maths is messed at the moment because i have some F'ed up egyption teacher. oops, i'm not racist he's not bad because he's egyption, he just has a bad teaching style and doesn't know correct english. So sad.. I have such a good teacher last semester.
