Hello,

Im doing some resaerch on Windows and Linux platforms, hoping some people in here can answer a few questions for me! smile2.gif

Who supplies the Operating system for Linux? and networking capability for both Windows and Linux?

Im also looking at the backwards compatibility between OS releases for both?

Thank you in advance!

I can certainly take a crack at these questions here.

Well, Linux is an OS that was originally developed by Linus Torvaldes which due to it's source being open was changed over the years into the kernel it is today, it was based off of the source code for Unix.

Networking for Windows and Linux? Well, it depends, Windows was no doubt worked on by someone in the company, whom I couldn't tell you. For Linux it was most likely a community member or a group.

Now backwards compatibility doesn't quite work in Linux as Linux has a plethora of different distributions based off of the vanilla Linux kernel. Windows comes with a compatibility mode and 7 offers an XP mode.

I'd recommend hitting up Wikipedia and some other sources to get more accurate information, however.

Well, if you ever need a hand or want to consult someone, I know how to handle a couple of different Linux Distributions pretty well.

I would have to agree that linux is rather good because of the way it is built,it is completely immune to viri and to-date i know of no linux viri that successfully passed from 1 computer to another without the users knowledge...

I think linux is good in the way its some what free and provides more security than Windows. Still there are huge difference betwen both of them which can be easy for you to do research.

If valve releases those Mac updates for Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, what operating system do you think is next on their hit list?

Hopefully PC gaming will become universal; I've used Linux (ubuntu) and it's nice, but it's not commercial enough for me to use professionally.

But hey, you can have a workstation for windows and a gaming station for linux.
Wouldn't that be nice?
