I was asking in another forum for help about backing up files or if there's another way to store my data somewhere so that I won't lose it.
I asked if it was better to buy an external HDD and copy-paste it there or just do a back up.
There's this guy who offered help and here's what he says:

QUOTE
Well if you want,I can make you a small program which will be copying the data from one location to another. All you have to do is to write the SOURCE and DESTINATION location for the first time and then just click the button that says "BACKUP NOW!".For example:

SOURCE: "C:\My data\"
DESTINATION: "C:\Backup\"

I can also make you that the program does this automatically every hour without requesting you to do anything manually. It's an EXE file and you can store it anywhere.
Think about it and let me know.

I don't know him at all, and I don't know if this program will send him any data in any way since he's the one to create this program.

Should I trust him?

here's what he says:

I made you small program with which you can backup files from any location to any location, except internet
You also have an option to let program to do the backup every hour automatically without doing anything manually!
Here is the link to download it:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/r01qs0

Scroll down and click the big DOWNLOAD button. After you have downloaded it,extract it using programs such as "7-zip" and after you have extracted it,open the folder called "Backup program" and then open the file called "Backup program.exe".

NOTE 1: While the backup is in progress, you will see the black console window.DO NOT TURN IT OFF!!!After that black console window closes, that means that the backup progress is complete.

NOTE 2: If the program won't work, you probably need to install the Microsoft .NET framework version 1.0 or newer version! You can get the Microsoft .NET framework version 1.0 from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Just install it,restart your computer and thats it!

do you get anything form this?

If you want, copy and pasting isn't bad. But there are reputable sources for backup software and it's a good idea to stick with them over something suspicious. If you don't know him and don't trust him, don't use it,

GFI Backup Home Edition and SyncBackSE are free and malware free, you can find them on Download.com.

Its still so suspicious if you ask me. When i think of it, viruses tend to be devastating after restarting your computer at times.

Interesting. I have checked the contents, nothing suspicious about it. Since it was from a forum, I suppose this person who gave you the assistance would not want to tarnish his own reputation.

It is a well made program utilizing the old but famous xcopy.exe from the olden days when we are using dos.

I believe this guy didn't think that you would want something too simple as copy and paste, thus gave you that program.

It should be safe to use. None of my antivirus software raised any alarm or suspicious activity. Besides, if it had to use a port to attempt to transfer anything over the internet, most Windows now have firewall and it would block its access by asking you if you allow that program which you can say no to.

Why risk downloading an .EXE file from a stranger? Odds are it's fine, but...you never know. There are plenty of free back-up utilities out there from reputable companies that have more features. Try Macrium Reflect. They have a free version and an inexpensive paid version with a few more bells and whistles.
