Hello,

Yesterday I went to upgrade my video driver, which failed and now my notebook doesn't have the driver correctly installed and I can't reverse it, I did a system restore but it didn't help because the old files for the driver are gone.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M70 FE5 with Windows XP.

I had gone to both the ATI and Toshiba websites and downloaded the drivers, none will work.

Right now I get this error message when I try to update the driver via the device manager, it's called "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" and it has a yellow exclamation mark beside it.

"There was a problem installing this hardware:

ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700

An error occurred during the installation of the device

Access is denied."

I am logged in with an administrator account so I don't know why access is denied.

When I directly try to run the setup file which came with the driver upgrade download, I get this error:

"Setup was unable to complete the installation.
Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."

I searched endlessly last night for both messages and nothing I found works, I'd appreciate any help, I am a web designer and need to get back to work but can't really work on this as it is because it's blurry, stretched and scrolling funny without the driver installed properly.

Thank you. smile2.gif

In device manager, right click the video device and select "update driver." See if that works for you. Also, you may try it through Windows Update.

Hello grihn, I've tried updating via the device manager, that's when I get the Access is Denied message.

How would I go about doing it via windows update?

Thanks.

On the windows XP start menu select "all programs" and "windows update" (located near the top of the menu. Then, do a custom scan and when the available updates show, select "hardware." See if there is an available update for your video card, and if there is, try to download and install it. Let me know if that works or not and we'll go from there.

Thanks for explaining, grihn, I checked and there's no available hardware updates for me.

Here's my setupapi.log, I keep getting "Acess Denied" so I think this is a registry permissions issue.

While being at this all day, and getting nowhere, I now have to use my Product Recovery DVD-Rom, I am backing up everything to my external HD.

I don't honestly know how to use the recovery disk, I've been looking for info but not fully clear on it, anyone with advice I'd appreciate hearing from you.....

Before you do that, try one more thing.

1) In device manager, right-click on the display adaptor and select uninstall. This will remove any driver the card is currently using. Restart the computer.

2) Download and install the program driver sweeper. You can read on how to use the program and exactly what it does from the link. Run that and remove any existing ATI drivers from your computer. Reboot again.

3) Download and install the latest ATI driver again. Make sure it's the correct driver. Here is the driver for the mobility X700 from AMD/ATI's website.

4) Restart one more time and see if it's working. If not, using the restore disk is very simple. Insert the CD into the drive and restart the computer. As soon as it powers on, during the post, repeatedly press F8 until the boot screen comes up. Select boot from cd-rom device. Simply follow the onscreen prompts and you will be fine. After running the setup CD, run any other CD's (driver, application, etc...).

If you run into any more problems, let me know.

grihn, I had already done all that and more, nothing worked, it's because my registry was corrupt and wouldn't let me have permissions.

I've restored my computer to factory settings with the recovery disk, then upgraded the video driver, everything's good now.

Thanks for your time.
