I need some help guys. I don't know what happened to my computer monitor, all I can see is the mouse pointer and the rest is black. The computer boots up normally, the display is good until after it is already in windows. I can see it boots up the bios and I can even enter on the bios and change some values. I tried the monitor in another computer and its good. The problem just start when its already in windows. All I can see is the mouse pointer and screen saver. What I remember doing last was installing some updates for windows( I can't even remember what kind of update). This is the same when in safe mode. Basically I don't know where to start since I can't see anything..

By "already in windows" do you mean AFTER you see the Windows XP boot-logo (with progress bar) screen, at what should be the desktop?

Have you tried booting to Safe-Mode, Command prompt?

What happens if you right-click the desktop? Do you get the Desktop Options dialog?

If you do, just reset everything.

You can borrow a known good PCI video card from a friend to verify that it's not a card problem (color mode).

I'm already passed the boot logo. everything is just black except for the mouse pointer. After a while, it will show the screen saver (windows flying). This is the same if I boot on safe mode or safe mode command prompt. Nothing happens also if I do a right click on the desktop.

Anyway, to cut the headache short, I just did a clean install. Everything is back to normal now.
