After combing through the forums, I think that I've found what I need to do, however I just want to confirm before I begin this;

I have the damn message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" that is evidently all too popular. I have the original XP disk, but my CD drive is shot. Also when I attempt to select an option (ie. Start from last known good config.) my keyboard doesn't respond whatsoever.

I have a new disk drive on order and am waiting for that to arrive.

Like everyone else I DO NOT want to lose any of the files that are on this computer (2 hard drives). I have many many many years of un-backed up work on it (stupid I know, I have an external now to fix that).

To be absolutely sure that I will not lose any files, should I attempt to simply repair the registry using the XP disk, or should I use Ubuntu as I've read on many other topics as a better way to recover and transfer the files?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thank you!

Using the Ubuntu approach is the best way to recover your files since ubuntu works irregardless if your Windows is functioning or not.

The success rate of a Windows repair installation is less than 30 % if you ask me because chances are that the service pack that is currently installed in your computer is higher than the one in the original CD. The usual outcome from a repair installation would be a stuck blinking cursor after the Windows loading screen and it does not go further.

Ubuntu is a great, reliable way to relocate your files to your external. Just run it from the CD and move your files from your harddrive to your external and you're set. If you have any questions, just ask.

Ok, so I got my new CD drive today, burned Ubuntu onto a disk from my laptop, and changed the BIOS on my desktop to load from the cd-rom. However, when it resets and loads up the Ubuntu disk, I get stuck on a language selection screen and my keyboard will not work. There is a 30 second timer that will automatically time out and when that happens the computer restarts and goes through the same thing over and over again...

I've tried plugging in my keyboard to different usb ports, but nothing changes. The weird thing is that the keyboard works just fine for changing the bios settings...
